“Imposed disintegration of a democratic and sovereign state would also come as a precedent, and may become a source of long-term concern and problems for the EU and U.S.,” Carpenter opined.

He warned that the decision on Kosovo’s future “was not a legal, ethical or historic matter, but rather a political issue.”

“Russia might prevent the precedent if it remained true to its position and veto a UN resolution set to give independence to the province. Such a move might thwart the new resolution, and increase tensions between Moscow, Europe and the U.S.,” Carpenter told Voice of America.

He also added that Serbia might take advantage of the Kosovo issue to prompt its EU entry, and receive economic and political privileges, since it could be regarded that the EU “owed something to Serbia”.
