BELGRADE There are slim chances that the opposition will unite, says Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID) Program Director Marko Blagojevic. He believes that there are too big differences among large opposition parties, the Democratic Party (DS), Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). “Slim chance of opposition parties becoming united” “What we can hardly expect is that the opposition will unite against the ruling coalition and start a joint appearance or a coordinated one if not a joint one. I think that there are irreconcilable differences between the DS and DSS and LDP and DSS,” Blagojevic says. He noted that it was a fact that it was hard to be in the opposition in Serbia without getting stronger. “The starts may align so this would be a timeout for the DS that it can use to refresh itself and start some new political victories,” he explained. Blagojevic said that a large number of parties in the government did not necessarily have to be a bad thing. “If they get along, the government will function, if they don’t, it won’t,” he stressed. “We now have a situation which is opposite to what we are used to. In the same government there are parties that were sworn enemies in the previous decades. At the moment I am not in position to make any kind of prognosis since the situation is highly unusual. It is possible we are in for a surprise and that something that looks very unusual will prove to be pretty effective in practice,” Blagojevic explained. He said that he could not judge in advance but that it was “odd” to merge some departments into the same ministry. “It looks highly strange to me to put together foreign economic relations, trade, tourism and telecommunications. This is being done because they want the number of ministries to be smaller but the number of ministries is a less important fact compared to how much the entire government will cost,” Blagojevic concluded.
