Serbian MiGs to undergo repairs

Stanković said yesterday’s deal made good on the promise the ministry has made at the start of its mandate, namely that “our sky will be guarded by our planes flown by our pilots”.

International economic relations minister and finance ministry coordinator Milan Parivodić said on the same occasion that the contract represented the first investment in the air force in 20 years.

According to him, the contract is worth between 24 and 25 million euros. Eight helicopters and a transport plane are also slated for repair at a later date.

Russian ambassador to Serbia Alexandar Alekseyev said the contract carried special importance for the relations between the two countries, and represented a sign of trust.

“This is another step on the road of good cooperation”, the ambassador said, adding he hoped the coming year will further improve relations between Serbia and Russia.

Serbian army Chief of Staff General Zdravko Ponoš said any decision to purchase new planes will be unrelated to Serbia’s Partnership for Peace membership and will not be political but rather an economic one.

“It isn’t realistic to contemplate that before 2010, therefore, we must repair what we have”, CoS Ponoš said.
