WASHINGTON Serbia's desire to include the UN in the talks with Pristina represents an attitude directed at reconciliation - which could encounter opposition in the EU This is according to Cato Institute Vice President Ted Carpenter, who spoke for the Tanjug news agency. Analyst: EU probably against including UN in talks He added that at the same time, Washington finds it more acceptable for Brussels to mediate the talks, "but that is not a priority for the U.S." The view is a change in Belgrade's position, he told Tanjug, adding that the EU, as any bureaucratic organization, would try to stop any attempts to diminish its influence. The U.S. would probably prefer the EU playing the chief role in this matter rather than the UN, but it is not a very firm stand from Washington, and they will monitor the situation, Carpenter noted. The best thing for Belgrade to do now is to maintain cautious cooperation while stressing the need to make significant territorial adjustments, he stated. "For example, having northern Kosovo stay with Serbia in order to reach a real, peaceful and sustainable solution to the problem, he continued. The hope is that the western powers might in the end display some flexibility regarding territorial adjustments, instead of the stubborn and inflexible attitude they have put on so far," he remarked.
