EU delegation in Serbia chief Vincent Degert said today that he did not doubt the pro-EU orientation of Serbian Deputy PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. Commenting on Dacic's appeal to the organization not to set new conditions for Serbia's membership bid after the country finalized its Hague Tribunal cooperation, Degert said the deputy PM "last year received the Best European Award". EU representative in Serbia "does not doubt Dacic" Dacic received this recognition precisely as the Serb minister who was most turned toward the European Union, media reports quoted Degert as saying. Dacic said on Thursday: "If anyone in the EU does not want Serbia to join, they should speak up. If the EU does not want us, we will have to live without it." Degert made his comments on Friday as he and Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic signed a financial agreement on EU's EUR 178.5mn grant-in-aid to Serbia. "The EU is not only imposing conditions on Serbia, as the public often assumes," noted Degert, adding that it "also provides support on its EU integration path", and putting the figure donated thus far at EUR 2.2bn.
