There are no indications that Hague fugitive Ratko Mladic is dead, War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic told daily Danas. He points out that decision to increase reward for information on two remaining Hague indictees shows “how much we care about respect of dignity of war crimes victims”. No indications that Mladic is dead We are paying a huge price each day, not just us but the next generations as well, the war crimes prosecutor said. He also added that “Mladic’s generals are in The Hague, Mladic’s fellow soldiers are in The Hague and there is only one word for such people…” When asked why it was revealed four years later that former Security-Information Agency (BIA) Director Rade Bulatovic offered to negotiate on Mladic’s surrender, Vukcevic said that some things had unfortunately been revealed too late. “I don’t think that anybody else negotiated officially or even was in direct contact with Mladic. But I think that they simply knew or could have known where his was,” he pointed out. The war crimes prosecutor stressed that arrest of Stanko Ristic (who was hiding Mladic) had a disastrous effect on Serbia’s fate and arrest of the most wanted Hague fugitive and that there were many questions that deserved answers and that “Rade Bulatovic can clearly answer them”. “We will have to talk about all this. Bulatovic stated that I was lying. Polygraph can give a clear answer who’s telling the truth and who’s hiding it. I have no doubt, I feel deceived and betrayed. I only don’t have an answer to this question – why Rade Bulatovic did it,” he was quoted as saying. Vukcevic pointed out that a large number of people were working around the clock to find the Hague fugitive but that there were no results which was worrying because “it is tragic that the suspect for the biggest crime after World War II is not in The Hague”. He hopes that Serge Brammertz’s report in December will be “objective, professional and without traces of politics”. Arrest of Mladic and Hadzic has no price, the war crimes prosecutor said and added that we “have already lost too much by being hostages of those two”. “It is our moral and international obligation, regardless of all pressures. I cannot come to terms with the fact that such potential perpetrators of war crimes with several thousands of victims are at large in European Serbia. That simply doesn’t go together,” Vukcevic concluded. Vladimir Vukcevic (Beta)
