The proposal states that all such actions that create propaganda for those who are indicted by state law or the Hague Tribunal, and can be punished by way of jail time of three months to three years.

Aleksandra Jerkov of the Vojvodina League of Social Democrats told B92 that the initiative was spurred by last week's hanging of posters with the face and name of Ratko Mladić in Belgrade's Avnoja Boulevard.

“We see that Serbia cannot move forward until it deals with its past, firstly with crimes that were committed in the name of the people and country,” Jerkov said.

“We were led by the fact that sanctioning the denial of genocide is one of the basic principles of democracy. Almost all European nations have such a law, most forbid using symbols that propagate genocide. It is a fact that what happened in Srebrenica is genocide, we all know who commanded over that genocide, we know what happened and if nothing else, who takes moral responsibility,” Jerkov said.

Democratic Party official Nada Kolundžija warned of the risks involved in trying to right a societal deformity by way of law.

“There is a danger that those who were deeply traumatized by personal experiences become victims of the implementation of this law, because they are very sensitive,” Kolundžija said, stressing the inability of some to differentiate between personal tragedy, self-defense, and genocide.

Vojvodina Deputies caucus chief Nenad Čanak announced earlier that the parliamentary reaction to this proposal would show, as far as the so-called democratic parties are concerned, what the opinions on this matter are.
