Amnesty criticizes UNMIK’s performance

The document criticizes UNMIK’s performance in the area of human rights pertaining to laws and regulations, judiciary, violence against women and minorities, use of force, torture, and trafficking, and suggests possible ways to improve the situation.

Amnesty International’s latest report, an update and a summary of a 50-page document entitled, “Kosovo: UNMIK – Conclusions of the Human Rights Committee”, notes that despite marked improvements in security for minorities since 2000, and the decline in the intensity and frequency of violent attacks, UNMIK’s failure to bring perpetrators of ethnically motivated killings to justice fuels the pervasive climate of impunity for inter-ethnic crimes in Kosovo.

The report recommends intensifying efforts to ensure safe conditions for the sustainable return of displaced people, in particular those belonging to minorities, as well as ensuring that they recover their property and receive compensation for damage done.
