The visa liberalization will have a positive impact on everyday life as well as politics, Mogherini said in Pristina.

"Today we took a big step forward. That means that Kosovo is Europe and that what we are doing is the European integration of Kosovo. This is a long, hard and complicated road," Mogherini said at a news conference attended by EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos and Kosovo Premier Isa Mustafa.

The Belgrade-Pristina dialogue has produced many agreements, but impetus must now be given to their implementation on both sides, Mogherini said.

Kosovo is part of the European family and it has made major progress in meeting the required criteria in the field of justice and home affairs, Avramopoulos said.

"Our progress report confirms that Kosovo has met all the requirements of the visa liberalization roadmap, on the understanding, of course, that by the day of adoption of this proposal by the European Parliament and Council, Kosovo will have ratified the border agreement with Montenegro and strengthened its track record in the fight against corruption and organised crime," he said.

According to him, Kosovo institutions had met all of the criteria for canceling visas but recalled that the freedom of movement was accompanied by obligations.

"A campaign will soon start for the purpose of preventing abuse of non-visa movement, which will very soon be guaranteed to Kosovo's citizens. From this moment on, the doors are open and the day when we will all feel closer is not far," Avromopoulos said.

According to Mustafa, the visa liberalization decision was "is a big accomplishment and a historical decision that opens Kosovo's prospects."

Mogherini and Avramopoulos visited Pristina a day after the EC proposed that the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament lift visa requirements for travelers from Kosovo for short stays in the Schengen area.

After the meeting with Mustafa, Mogherini also met with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci.
