Russian media are reporting that the improvised device contained shrapnel in order to maximize death and injury to the trains' passengers.

The Russian Investigative Committee has identified 22-year-old Akbarzhon Dzhalilov, a Kyrgyz-born Russian citizen, as the suspect believed to have carried out the terrorist bombing, RT reported on Tuesday.

Russian authorities will take all necessary measures to provide assistance to those injured in blasts in the St. Petersburg subway, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, according to the agency.

Later in the evening, Putin paid tribute to the victims by laying flowers at the Tekhnologichesky Institut metro station.

The president also spoke on the phone with US President Donald Trump, who "offered his condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the heinous terrorist attack in the St Petersburg metro and asked Putin to convey his words of support to the Russian people," a statement posted on the kremlin.ru website said.

Putin "thanked his American colleague for the expression of solidarity," while they "noted that terrorism is an evil that must be fought jointly and agreed to continue their contacts."
