Highest death toll in Iraq since U.S. invasion in 2003

The number of people who died in a bomb attack in Baghdad last weekend has reached 250, the Iraqi government said on Wednesday.

Dozens of others have been wounded.

A truck filled with explosives was activated in the Karrada area of the city as families were out shopping for the upcoming end of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

The Islamic State terrorist group, who adhere to an extreme version of Sunni Islam, claimed responsibility for the attack which targeted Shiites.

The attack happened only a week after Iraqi forces took Fallujah, a major IS stronghold.

The Iraqi government came under severe criticism in the wake of the massacre, with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi facing an angry group of people when he visited the site.

On Tuesday, Interior Minister Mohammed Salem al-Ghabban submitted his resignation, which is yet to be accepted.
