Russia deploys "some units" in Crimea
"Now there are several military units out there taking up positions in the event that there's some kind of resistance, armed aggression, military expansion from Kiev," he told the Echo of Moscow Radio late on Wednesday. The parliamentarian added that Russian troops might be needed if the referendum on Crimea's status, to be held on Sunday, led to a sudden military intervention from the authorities in Kiev, and noted this was "likely," AFP reported.
"It's not a large-scale military operation. If, God forbid, bandit units rush toward southeast of Ukraine, in particular toward Crimea, you understand it would be difficult to confront this immediately. We are not magicians. Therefore, yes, some military units are taking up positions there (in Crimea)," said Slutsky, who often speaks on behalf of the Duma on matters related to Ukraine.
