RIO DE JANEIRO Protests persist in Brazil with at least a million people gathering in the streets of various cities last night. The first victim was reported as an 18-year-old died in Ribeiro Preto. First victim of rioting in Brazil Brazilian media said the teenager died when he was run over by a car whose driver was trying to evade a group of protesters. The car struck two others. President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff canceled a trip abraod and convened an emergency meeting of the cabinet. In Rio de Janeiro, more than 300,000 people gathered and clashed with the police in front of the town hall. The police threw tear gas at the demonstrators and fired rubber bullets. More than 60 were injured, while looters smashed shop windows and stole goods. In the capital Brasilia, the protesters tried to forcibly enter the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but the police prevented them. The police said protesters smashed 55 windows on the ground floor of the ministry in an attempt to get inside. Windows were also broken on a local cathedral. In this town, 55 people were injured. In Vitoria, in the southeast of Brazil, a group of protesters destroyeda bridge toll station and tried to enter the courthouse. The police used tear gas to contain the rioting. In Salvador de Bahia, in the northeast, there were more than 20,000 people gathered for the riots. They set fire to a bus rented by the International Football Federation (FIFA), which organizes the Confederations Cup. The competition is being held in Brazil now, while next year the country will host the World Cup. The protesters criticized the huge funds set aside to organize it, "while Brazil is experiencing economic hardship." The demonstrations in Brazil began about ten days ago, first in Sao Paulo, over an increase in public transport fares and the high tax burden, corruption of politicians and the poor state of health and education.
