ANTIGUA President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Vuk Jeremic attended the 43rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), in Antigua, Guatemala. He announced that a UN thematic debate on social inequality will be convened in partnership with the OAS on July 8. Jeremic announces debate on social inequality Jeremic, who is the first UNGA president to have addressed an OAS General Assembly meeting, has already spoke at OAS meetings five times, but in his capacity as Serbian minister of foreign affairs. He laid emphasis on improving the cooperation between the OAS and the UN, adding that he strongly support the member-countries in an effort to seize the enormous potential of the Western Hemisphere. Jeremic said that he already discussed the issue, one of the most important ones faced by Latin America, with Pope Francis in the Vatican last week. I do not think we have made enough effort in addressing some of the most important challenges of our time - the eradication of extreme poverty, a considerable reduction of the global gap between the rich and poor, without causing irreparable environmental damage, said the UNGA president. The OAS is the world's oldest regional organization, founded in 1948, which today brings together all 35 independent states of the Americas. While serving as Serbia's foreign minister, Jeremic noted, he visited more than 20 OAS member-states, some of them several times. In Rio de Janeiro last year, he said, the world leaders set the core principles of the post-2015 agenda, a universal framework that will define much of the UN's work for decades to come. "I think we are moving in the direction of a democratization of the international system, said Jeremic. Over the past few years, a growing number of influential voices from many governmental, scientific and non-governmental circles and the private sector have spoken to the fact that a huge reorganization in the relations between people is underway," he added. Jeremic expressed his deep appreciation to OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza for promoting a socially inclusive economic development in the region of the Americas. Opening the meeting, Insulza welcomed Jeremic noting that the whole of Latin America voted for his election as UNGA president. At the end of the meeting, Jeremic was invited to be a special guest at a Caribbean states summit taking place this year. Jeremic had bilateral meetings with representatives of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Panama and Haiti on the sidelines of the annual OAS General Assembly. (Beta/AP, file) Tanjug
