Sudanese forces killed hundreds of fighters from Southern Sudan during battles that raged for several days over the contested oil town of Heglig. Adviser to Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir Nafi Ali Nafi said that the number of deaths within the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and the mercenaries at the Battle of Heglig reached 400, reported the Sudanese media center, quoted by AFP. The separation of the two countries led to growing tensions since the solution was not reached either on the division of oil resources, or determining of state borders. The relations recently worsened since Sudan wants to recover crude oil transit payments from South Sudan. None of the attempts at negotiations have yielded results thus far. The SPLA is the army of South Sudan.

The Sudanese Army two days ago regained control of the capital of Hegliga, ten days after the troops of South Sudan withdrew.

Previously, in March, Southern Sudan took over control of oil fields in Heglig, which were previously controlled by Khartoum, the AP reported.

Southern Sudan declared independence last year, after the longest civil war in Africa, which broke out in 1995 and ended in 2005.

The war resulted in the deaths of some two million people.
