The company at the centre of Germany’s dioxin food contamination could face criminal charges according to the country’s agriculture ministry. Harles und Jentsch supplied oils to animal feed producers that should have gone for the industrial production of bio-fuel instead. German farms closed due to contamination Some 3,000 tones of dioxin-contaminated feed was discovered in German poultry, pig and dairy farms this week. One sample was found to contain 77-times the authorized level of the toxin. Farmer Walter Babbe said: ‘It simply should not be allowed that these problems happen in the production of this stuff.’ Some 4,700 farms, mostly in northern Germany, have been shut as a precaution. The farmers’ association said it is costing agriculture between EUR 40 and 60mn per week. German and EU officials are now considering new measures to keep industrial oils separate from those destined for animal feed. The minister for consumer protection in Lower Saxony, Konrad Scholz said: ‘It is impossible to employ the number of people needed to rule out every violation. Every family has a black sheep, and that is what it looks like in this case.’ Authorities stress the dioxin levels detected in the contaminated eggs pose no risks. Over time, and in greater quantities though, the chemical accumulates in the body and that can be damaging to health.
