Legendary marathon runner Franjo Mihalic passes away

Mihalic broke 22 records in his career. Among his greatest successes was the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, and the Boston Marathon victory two years later.

He was also the winner of marathons in Tokyo, Moscow and Athens, the Midnight Run in Sao Paulo, and the International Cross Country Championships in Paris, a precursor of today's IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

Mihalic worked as a teacher at the Military Gimnasium in Belgrade, and had a long and successful career as a veteran athlete. He was also a coach at the Partizan Belgrade Athethics Club, and a referee and organizer of athletic competitions.

A commemoration will be held on February 18 in the Belgrade City Assembly. Mihalic will be laid to rest the same day in the Alley of the Greats of Belgrade's New Cemetary.
