Patriarch congratulates new pope, mentions Kosovo The Serbian patriarch expressed hope the new head of the pope, like his predecessor, "by seeking peace and justice, which are sorely needed in this world, will remain on the path of brotherly and unwavering support to the Orthodox Serb people in its extraordinary efforts to preserve the territorial integrity of Serbia in the issue of unilaterally declared independence of the so-called Republic of Kosovo." Sending sincere congratulations to the pope on behalf of the SPC and his own behalf, Patriarch Irinej noted that his service will be "accompanied by worldly temptations." "The image of a man's dignity in our times is clearly crumbling under the pressures of various injustices, wars of oppression, unfounded threats from totalitarian regimes and governments which do not consider the future of this world, let alone Christ's kingdom of heaven," said the SPC head. "Therefore we pray to our Lord Jesus Christ to bestow upon you an abundance of his mercy and spiritual strength in the new position you have been called to by the Holy Spirit, so that you may persevere on the path of the Gospels, with his timeless message to the world," the Serbian Patriarch said in the message published on the SPC website.
