Serbian Orthodox Christians today mark Good Friday - commemorating the day when Jesus Christ was condemned to death and died on the cross. The day - known in Serbian also as Great Friday - is marked with mourning, while liturgies are not served in temples. It is considered to be the saddest day for Christian believers. Orthodox Christian Serbs mark Good Friday Evening services in Orthodox churches will late on Friday mark the time when Christ was removed from the cross on which he died in Jerusalem. From Friday until midnight liturgies early on Sunday, bells will not be rang in Serbian Orthodox churches - also in observance of mourning. In Serbia, Good Friday is a day when worshipers fast and refrain from any type of work. Instead, in preparation for the celebration of Easter on Sunday, cooked eggs are decorated - most often colored red - symbolizing the blood spilled by Christ and the new life born out of the sacrifice he consciously made. On Thursday, SPC Patriarch Irinej sent his Easter message, which noted that the crucifixion and death of Christ represented the greatest and most terrible clash in the historical fight between good and evil, truth and untruths, life and death. The patriarch also called on Serbian Christians to welcome Easter - the day celebrating the resurrection of Christ - by constantly praying for their sisters and brothers in Kosovo and Metohija - aware of the meaning, message and teaching of the holiday, which obligates them to profess and safeguard their Orthodox faith. Easter is a four-day public holiday in Serbia starting on Good Friday, while the first working day next week will be Tuesday. The country's minority Catholic and Protestant Christians celebrated Easter last week. Easter eggs are seen in a Serbian home (file) B92 Tanjug
