Teachers’ unions demand continuation of negotiations with the government, otherwise they will completely stop working. Representatives of the three teachers’ unions that have been on strike since January 28, have requested new negotiations with the government and announced that they will completely stop working on March 25 if their request is not met. Teachers demand new negotiations Independence Trade Union President Tomislav Zivanovic told B92 that the unions would invite Education Minister Zarko Obradovic to return to the negotiating table. He added that the unions would also invite Serbian President Boris Tadic to join the talks. “This isn’t a problem of the teachers anymore, but a problem of the entire state and that is why we are asking the president to intervene because it is about the whole country’s interest,” Zivanovic stressed. “If there is no progress, all we’ve got left is to radicalize (the protest) on March 25 and stop classes in schools and gather in the streets, meaning in front of the Serbian government headquarters,” the union president explained. On the other hand, the education minister says he will have to wait for an official letter from the unions and that he will consult Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic about the issue. “This is the government’s official policy and not the minister’s arbitrary decision. Once the letter arrives I will notify the prime minister and consult with him,” Obradovic pointed out.
