The water levels of rivers in western Serbia are stagnating and even decreasing in some parts, says Serbian police (MUP) Emergency Sector Chief Predrag Maric. The flood wave has passed through Prijepolje, where the water level of the Lim River is declining, and it is now headed toward Sabac. Situation in flooded areas improves Maric does not expect that the water will flood family homes but says that it is possible that it could get into certain summer houses. According to him, the MUP Emergency Sector was pumping water out of 30 locations last night and that sector’s civil protection teams have been sent to the most endangered towns but that there was no need to evacuate people. “The situation is much better. The Lim River is withdrawing to its riverbed, the water is withdrawing in towns such as Ljubovija and Loznica and the flood wave is headed toward Sabac. I think that some summer houses, about 40 buildings, will be partially flooded but I don’t expect the wave to threaten houses in which people live,” the MUP Emergency Sector chief pointed out. He also stressed that the Emergency Sector would withdraw some of its people from the area during the day considering that the water level of the Lim River is declining. “Several teams have been formed and dispatched together with the Red Cross to the endangered areas in order to mitigate consequences. They will assess the damage together with town emergency headquarters,” Maric explained. The water level of the Lim River in the town of Prijepolje decreased by almost a meter this morning. About 50 citizens were evacuated and over 150 homes and other buildings were damaged. The weather forecast has announced new rainfall for today. “For us that means that we’ll stay in the field, because when the water withdraws it will be necessary to pump out water, it’s necessary to help the citizens return to their homes as soon as possible, so we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” the MUP Emergency Sector chief concluded.
