The Hungarian village of Kolontar, already heavily affected, has been evacuated this morning for fear that spilled toxic sludge will hit the village again. The toxic red sludge from the alumina plant breached the dam wall on October 4, flooding 280 houses and destroying natural life in the area of four Hungarian municipalities near the town of Ajka. Hungary fears new toxic spill The disaster's confirmed death toll rose to seven, making it the greatest environmental catastrophe in the history of Hungary. According to the expert opinions, the dam wall which secures one of the plant's reservoirs was damaged and there is a risk the toxic sludge would spill again. "We began evacuating Kolontar today around 6 am, when we discovered the wall near the Reservoir 10 was damaged", disaster unit spoksman Tibor Dobson said. He added the decision was made by Minister of Interior Sandor Pinter at the crisis committee meeting held early this morning. "We are ready to evacuate the neighboring village of Devecser, if necessary," he said. About 800 Kolontar residents began leaving the village by buses, and both domestic and foreign reporters had to leave the scene. The villages of Kolontar and Devecser were the most affected by the toxic spill. Tibor Dobson had previously stated that the entire ecosystem of the river Marcal, a Danube tributary which was directly affected by the toxic spill, was destroyed by the pollution.
