Minister for Diaspora Srdjan Sreckovic on Friday backed calls for denationalization and restitution of the nationalized property. It is an issue of observing the fundamental human right to private property and Serbia is the only country from the former communist bloc which has not adopted relevant legislation, he explained. Minister urges denationalization Speaking at a round table on denationalization, organized by his ministry and the Serbian Unity Congress, Sreckovic said that a law on restitution had to be adopted because Serbia would thus "put a end to the inglorious part of its past and be equal to the European legislation in this respect". This is a legal, political and economic issue, but there has been no political will so far to solve this problem despite the Council of Europe recommendation that the restitution law has to be adopted and that its implementation has to be ensured, he said. Director of the Serbian Legislation Secretariat Gradimir Nenadovic said that from the legal aspect in the absence of a law on restitution, the state did not have an obligation or possibility to implement restitution, "despite its will and intention". The first step on this path was made in 2005 with the adoption of a law on the registration of nationalized assets, he said. The denationalization and restitution problem pertains to those Serbians whose private property was taken from them after the end of the Second World War, when the communists established their rule in Serbia, and the rest of the former Yugoslavia.
