Convict dies after massive prison brawl

According to the head of Justice Ministry Penitentiary Directorate, Saša Vukadinović, the fight in the prison occurred on June 21 at 4 a.m.

“In the sleeping quarters, several groups planned a synchronized attack with metal objects and assaulted a group of eight prisoners. The perpetrators are still unknown,” according to a statement from the prison.

Eight prisoners serving sentences from one to ten years were injured.

Six returned to jail after receiving medical help at the Valjevo hospital, while the two who suffered the most serious injuries, Lazar Kovačević and Kristijan Stojanović, were taken to the Belgrade Emergency Center.

Kovačević died due to the injuries sustained, while Stojanović continues to receive treatment.

The Valjevo Municipal Court is investigating the case and has ordered an autopsy of the deceased after the makeshift metal knife that caused Kovačević’s fatal wounds was found.

There are no clear facts as to why the fight broke out and who participated in it, but it is believed that two rival groups within the prison were involved.

The statement given by the prison also suggests the involvement of several prison employees.

According to the statement “prison guards immediately intervened, but since the attack was quick and took place in several different locations, the perpetrators were not caught at the scene of the crime.”

A team of experts is expected to take on the investigation in Valjevo, according to the prison statement.
