Highway Mafia trial starts today

A former Serbian Public Road Enterprise (Putevi Srbije) employee recorded the largest electronic fraud in Serbia by camera. B92 aired the recording together with several reports on how the company's director Dragan Jocić allegedly hid the evidence.

Even though Jocić, who also occupies the post of one of the ruling coalition partners New Serbia (NS) vice president, was familiar with the video, he reportedly hid evidence that might have aided the investigation, issuing an order to tag all company documentation as an official, state and military secret and keep it in a strongbox.

Jocić disobeyed requests both from the Supreme Court and Serbia’s commissioner for public information Rodoljub Šabić to grant access to the documentation.

Highway mafia members were issuing forged toll cards via specially-designed software they would uninstall from the computer every time the shift finished, during which they exchanged card numbers by phone. Police tapped the conversations and detained as many 53 persons belonging to the network.
