The oldest privately-owned television station in Macedonia, A1, stopped broadcasting, it was announced on Sunday. The media outlet shut down due to bankruptcy procedures over its debt worth EUR 30mn. Macedonian A1 TV shuts down The Macedonian state agency for electronic communications, AEK, said that it revoked the broadcasting license granted to A1 after a court announced the station's bankruptcy. A1 was known for its strong criticism of the Macedonian government. The AP news agency reported that earlier this year, the station's bank accounts were frozen while its owner was placed under arrest. A1 was founded in 1993, and currently employs 234 people.
