The Croatian-Slovenian Relay of Brotherhood and Unity has started in Umag, a small town in western Croatia. Around 50 people gathered for the start of the relay, which was a symbol of the communist rule in the former Yugoslavia under Josip Broz Tito. "Brotherhood and Unity" relay resurrected in Slovenia Most of the crowd were members of the Josip Broz Tito Society from Croatia's Istria County, the Tito's Republic association and the Central Committee of the Croatian Communist Party, which organized the relay. There were a number of banners at the start praising Broz and the brotherhood and unity philosophy. Member of the Josip Broz Tito Society Robert Graso read a message before the start. "The Relay of Brotherhood and Unity brings warmth to the hearts of all the nations and minorities in the former Yugoslavia. So we take this occasion to salute all the youth, working class and all those who have not forgotten that Tito's time was a time of great love and peace in the country and the world," says the message in Croatian and Italian, which will arrive in Belgrade together with the relay on May 25 - said to have been Broz's birthday - to be placed at his tomb. The event - which had people carry a relay through all six republics of the federation, arriving in Belgrade for a grandiose stadium finale - was first held in 1945 and lasted until 1987. It was a public show of loyalty to the Yugoslav dictator, who came to power after the Second World War, and remained there until his death in 1980 - as life-long president of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ), and leader of the country's only party - the Communists.
