Forensic scientists exhumed what are believed to be the bodies of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena at the request of their children. Ceausescu ruled Romania for 25 years with an iron fist before being ousted and executed during the 1989 anti-communist revolt in which more than 1,000 people were killed. Romania: Ceausescus’ remains exhumed A team of pathologists took DNA samples in order to determine whether the remains really belong to the couple. Mircea Oprean, the couple's son-in-law and husband of their late daughter Zoia, was present at the exhumation. Ceausescus’ only living son Valentin, however, was not there. Zoia Ceausescu had sued the defense ministry in 2005, saying she had doubts that her parents were buried in the cemetery. She died of cancer in 2006 and her brother Valentin took up the case. Oprean told private TV channel Realitatea that the family doubted that Nicolae and Elena had been buried there and that he expected results of the DNA analyses. Ceausescu was the head of the communist regime in Romania from 1956 until 1989. His wife exerted a significant influence on his rule. The regime was overthrown on December 22, 1989. Ceausescu and his wife unsuccessfully tried to flee Bucharest. After a summary trial, Ceausescu and his wife were executed by a firing squad three. (Tanjug)
