A 13-year old girl from Knin in Croatia woke up from a coma two weeks ago and started speaking fluent German, "instead of her mother tongue". This is according to Croatian media reports, who also say that besides by pediatricians, the girl has also been examined by the hospital’s psychologist, but the cause for the change of the language she speaks remains unknown. Child wakes up from coma "speaking fluent German" Croatian daily 24 Sata writes that the girl spoke German after the coma "much better than she could ever have learned at school". She was admitted to the hospital in the town of Split two months ago for blood poisoning. Neuropsychiatrist and court expert Mijo Milas pointed out that the case was impossible to medically explain, and that the change likely came "from the deep subconscious". “Much can be kept deep inside a young person’s brain, so the girl could have perceived the German language from her environment and school lessons to a far greater degree than expected, or that she was showing. It’s possible that she was mentally connected to someone who had been studying the language in her proximity,” the doctor was quoted as saying. Milas stressed that numerous cases were described in literature of people who spoke ancient languages after waking up from states of unconsciousness.
