The European Parliament election campaign gets under way today in Slovenia. The election will be held on June 7. Euro election campaign under way in Slovenia The majority of Slovenian parties have submitted their lists of candidates, most of whom are familiar faces on the Slovenian political scene. The Party of Slovenian Democrats has former Foreign Minister Zoran Taler at the head of its list, a move that has triggered consternation in certain quarters, as Taler is not even a member of the party. The Liberal Democrats of Slovenia have the European rapporteur for Serbia, Jelko Kacin, as their candidate, while the president of the Slovenian parliament’s foreign policy committee, Ivo Vajgl, will be the candidate for the Zares party. The largest opposition party, led by Janez Jansa, has proposed former Education Minister Milan Zver. The campaign will run until June 5, two days before the vote. There is a limit on how much the parties can spend on the campaign, which is EUR 0.40 per registered voter. With 1,703,521 registered voters in Slovenia, that means that parties can spend no more than EUR 680,000 on their campaigns. All people entitled to vote in Slovenia have the right to vote in the European elections too, as do all EU citizens that are permanent residents of Slovenia. MEPs are chosen by a proportional representation system, where the voter can cast a vote for only one list, for whom he or she can also choose to vote for a specific candidate.
