The European Commission has announced that Olli Rehn's meeting with the Slovenian and Croatian foreign ministers has been postponed indefinitely. The EU enlargement commissioner had been due to meet in Brussels with Samuel Zbogar and Gordan Jandrokovic to discuss the latest proposal for resolving the border dispute between the two countries that has a led to a freeze on Zagreb’s further EU integration. Rehn meeting with Slovenian, Croatian FMs postponed Rehn’s latest proposal is still under wraps and all that is known about it for now is that Slovenia has responded positively to it, judging by a recent statement by Slovenian MEP Jelko Kacin, while Croatia has yet to respond, according to Slovenian media. Former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari had been expected to attend today’s meeting, though Rehn did not wish to divulge what his role would be in today’s talks. Rehn earlier proposed Ahtisaari as a mediator in the dispute. Ahead of today’s scheduled meeting, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader reiterated Croatia’s position that it wanted to settle the dispute through international law, repeating that Zagreb sought friendship with Ljubljana, but that it did not plan to buy it with territory, adding that Slovenia would be well-advised to lift its blockade. Meanwhile, Slovenian President Danilo Tuerk told Al Jazeera that the issue could theoretically be settled in the space of a few months, with the help of the European Commission and its mediators. Asked whether he saw Croatia in the EU a year from now, Tuerk replied that Slovenia wanted Croatia in the EU, but that Zagreb first had to settle all open issues, such as cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and reforming its justice system. The Czech EU presidency has repeated its warning that it has already had to postpone its negotiating conference on Croatian EU accession, from March 27 until April 24, on one occasion because of the dispute, and that if no solution to the problem is found, it would include it on the agenda of the next formal meeting of EU foreign ministers.
