Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor proposed that the negotiating conference between the EU and Croatia, scheduled for March, be postponed. He said that if the gathering was postponed for April, there would be enough time for the European Commission, Croatia and Slovenia to confirm whether changes are possible in the issue which has forced Slovenia to block Croatia’s association talks with the EU. Slovenia wants conference postponed “It is hard to expect this to happen in March. There is little chance that it will happen in such a short period of time,” Pahor said. He has discussed his proposal with officials from the Czech Republic, which is presiding over the EU currently, but also with officials from Sweden and Hungary. According to media in Slovenia, Pahor warned EU officials he talked to, of the fact that once Croatia finishes its negotiations for EU association, its entrance into the EU must be confirmed by the Slovenian parliament with a two-thirds vote. Pahor said that if Slovenian PMs are not content with the protection of Slovenian national interest, they could ask for a referendum on Croatia’s entrance into the EU. He also said that he is glad that only a small number of signatures have been gathered for the petition to hold a referendum on Croatia’s NATO membership. According to the Slovenian constitution, the initiator of a referendum has a deadline of 35 days to gather 40,000 signatures in order for a referendum to be announced. The Slovenian People’s Party, which started the initiative, has only gather several hundred signatures up until now, which makes it highly unlikely that they will be able to reach 40,000 by March 26.
