Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic on Tuesday called an early general election for March 29. Prior to that, the parliament shortened its own mandate at the cabinet's initiative late on Jan. 26. Montenegro: Early election called for March The government justified the need for an early election with "the necessity of providing a full four-year term for the demanding tasks within the process of association with the EU." Vujanovic said that the election campaign starts now and will last until midnight on March 27. The deadline for the submission of election tickets is from Feb. 16 to March 4. The opposition and analysts, however, claim that the government's motive for holding an election at this time is to ensure a new term in office before Montenegro is hit harder by the global economic crisis. The opposition believes that the calling of the election is an act of "political and legal violence," due to disharmony between electoral legislation and the Constitution, adding that a question mark was hanging over the legitimacy of the election.
