Macedonian legislators are set to back a move that will lead to early parliamentary elections. Macedonia’s ruling center-right party, VMRO-DPMNE and their coalition partners, the Democratic Party of Albanians DPA, on Wednesday agreed to back a proposal. Macedonia decides on snap polls “The early elections would provide conditions for a more efficient parliament and bigger capacity for reforms needed for the speeding up of the Euro-Atlantic reforms,” the country’s Foreign Minister and VMRO DPMNE member Antonio Miloshoski told media on Wednesday. Media speculate elections could be held in June. The initiative was submitted to the assembly on Tuesday by the main Albanian opposition party, the Democratic Union for Integration, DUI. Macedonia’s main opposition, the Social Democrats, however are against early elections and have urged for a technical government to take over given the delicate position the country is in. Skopje’s faces two major impending challenges. It is in the midst of United Nations-sponsored talks with Athens, which is insisting on the country to change its name “Republic of Macedonia” in exchange for an invitation to join NATO. Greece blocked Macedonia’s NATO invitation at the alliance’s summit in Bucharest last week arguing Skopje’s use of the name “Republic of Macedonia” might lead Skopje to make territorial claims over Greece’s own northern province of Macedonia. Moreover, the country has a tight schedule for completing eight key benchmarks which the European Commission has set over when it can start accession talks with the European Union. Citing unnamed sources who were present at the Wednesday’s Skopje meeting between the United States' envoy to NATO, Victoria Nuland and Macedonian leaders, local media reported that the U.S. diplomat advised the country to carry on with reforms and not get put off course by elections.
