“The Republic of Macedonia Skopje” is the latest name proposal in the UN-led talks between Macedonia and Greece. This proposal was presented to the Macedonian and Greek sides by United Nations envoy Matthew Nimitz in New York three days ago. Still no consensus in Macedonian name crisis Senior Macedonian officials discussed the U.S. diplomat’s proposal last night. After a meeting between Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, no details regarding the Nimitz proposal were given to the press, save to say that Macedonia’s opinion would first be given to the U.S. envoy directly. According to unofficial information, the Macedonian side feels that the new proposal is a slight improvement on other proposals put forward during this 17-year saga. This name would be used by Macedonia in all international organizations and communications with Greece. However, according to Macedonian media, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis has said that the proposal is not to Athens’ liking. Bakoyannis said that Greece would not hesitate to use its veto on Macedonia’s invitation to join NATO, expected in the coming week at the Bucharest summit, if no solution to the name dispute was found. Washington has joined the negotiations directly over the past weeks in order to avert this eventuality. Negotiations will continue in Washington and will be mediated directly by U.S. Under Secretary of State Daniel Fried. An agreement could be reached directly before or even at the Bucharest NATO summit, where the Macedonian and Greek presidents are due to meet in the company of U.S. President George Bush.
