Olli Rehn says that 2008 could be a historic year for Macedonia’s European integration. “The country has made important progress over the last few months in political dialogue and adopting concrete laws, as well as in judicial and police reform,” the European Enlargement commissioner said after meeting with Macedonian President Nikola Gruevski. Rehn: Important year for Macedonia He added that the EU was prepared to begin talks with Macedonia if the necessary reforms were carried out this year. Rehn said that the EU had offered a clear path which led to the beginning of negotiations, with established criteria that Macedonia had to meet. The European Commission will decide in late October or early November whether Macedonia will begin membership talks. Gruevski said that Macedonia had already prepared an action plan for meeting the key criteria that Rehn had outlined for Skopje. “We looked it over in detail and created an action plan in the government, which is complete and which we will be able to give to the European Commission in order to receive a positive report that will give Macedonia a date for opening talks,” the Macedonian president explained.
