President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, started his working visit to Hungary meeting President of that country, Katalin Novák, at the Kelebija - Tompa crossing.

Vučić and Novak will talk with representatives of various border services of Hungary, and then they will address the media. After that, a presentation of technical devices and equipment is planned.

Back in 2015, Hungary set up barriers along the border with Serbia, 175 kilometers long, which have since been additionally strengthened. In November, during a meeting in Belgrade, representatives of Serbia, Hungary and Austria signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between the three countries in order to fight illegal migration as effectively as possible.

It was then agreed that the three countries would jointly employ a greater number of policemen on the border with North Macedonia, as well as include significant equipment, cars with thermal imaging cameras, in order to shift the defense against illegal migration to the southern borders.

"Serbia does not want to be a parking lot for illegal migrants," President Vučić said at the time and said that Serbia has always been understanding and showed solidarity towards refugees and those who are having a hard time and will continue to do so. He pointed out that the number of illegal migrants in Serbia has almost doubled compared to last year, and that they most often arrive from the direction of North Macedonia and Bulgaria. The largest number of migrants arrive in Serbia from Afghanistan (40 percent) and Syria (30 percent), as well as from Pakistan, Burundi and Morocco, said Vučić.
