He is a former commander of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), whom the Basic Court in Kosovska Mitrovica found guilty of war crimes committed against civilians, sentencing him to six years in prison.

Selimi was released early in January this year after serving more than five years, and was then appointed as a political adviser to Ramush Haradinaj, the prime minister of the provisional Pristina institutions.

Selimi's lawyer Tomi Gashi told Pristina-based Albanian language website Insajderi that his client's diplomatic appointment would be a "normal" development, given that he held the same position earlier, and that the law does not prohibit him from performing such duties.
