"Data protection situation extremely worrisome"

According to Sabic Serbia is "practically at the very beginning of implementing European standards in its legal order and in real life, and that the process had to be significantly expedited and improved."

"Unfortunately, that necessity is insufficiently understood and recognized. The best illustration is that back in summer 2010 the Serbian government passed a Personal Data Protection Strategy, yet, even though it was supposed to do so within three months, it still has not enacted an Action Plan for its [the strategy's] implementation," said Sabic.

"Competent state bodies are doing impermissibly little, or, to be more specific, are doing nothing to further harmonize the legal framework, especially the Law on Personal Data Protection, with European standards, despite the country being so far away from completing that task," he said. Beta reported.

Sabic added that "no law yet regulates the numerous areas extremely important for personal data protection: video surveillance, biometrics, security checks and the private security sector, which entails many potential and real hazards to the violation of numerous citizens' rights."
