President of the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence said she did not think the initiative had been rejected because of attitudes towards Serbia and Prime Minister Vucic, adding that she was not sure it would have been supported had it been put forward by anyone else in the region.

“I think the region is still not ripe enough for such an initiative and that, even though certain politicians may personally think that it would be good, they are not sure if their electorate might find it acceptable,” she said.

“All what we have witnessed recently, when it comes to these two anniversaries - Srebrenica and Operation Storm - indicated that the electorate is still quite willing to accept a 'whirling up' of emotions,” she said.

"We still have a kind of a situation in which, sadly, the need to truly overcome the past and achieve long-term reconciliation has neither been supported widely enough, nor has it been well-conceived. And that is why I think that this initiative arrived prematurely,” said Liht.
