Deputy PM Ivica Dacic announced in Moscow on Monday that the humanitarian center in Nis, southern Serbia, will be opened soon. Speaking after his meeting with Russia's Emergency Situations minister Sergey Shoigu, he dismissed all speculations that a military base is being built at the location. Russo-Serbian center in south "to be opened soon" “We are planning to open a humanitarian center in Nis together with the Russian minister in March or April. European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva recently paid a visit to Belgrade when this issue and possible objections by the European Commission were discussed at a trilateral meeting which resolved all possible dilemmas,” Dacic noted. The Serbian minister underlined that certain parties obviously do not understand the purpose of the center giving rise to speculations about a military base, or a regional center for emergency management, or that someone is bothered by the Russian presence in the region. We clearly stated that this is a Serbia-Russian humanitarian center and that no one has an intention to control the situation in the region, but rather to help countries which are in need, Dacic underlined. He recalled that Serbia and Russia signed the agreement on establishment of the center in the presence of the two presidents, Boris Tadic and Dmitry Medvedev, and reiterated that the center in Nis is intended for alleviation of consequences of emergency situations, regardless if it was in the territory of Serbia or other countries upon their request. Dacic stated that the center is also very important for the fact that European countries will be able to use it to call Russia for help. Dacic announced that according to a decision by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Russia will deliver the total of 500 tons of humanitarian aid for Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija over the center in Nis on Wednesday.
