Hague prosecutor welcomes Mladić arrest

Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz welcomed on Thursday the arrest of former commander of the Bosnian Serb Army (VRS) Ratko Mladic. He commended the Serbian authorities for their success and expressing belief that this will contribute to reconciliation in the region. Hague prosecutor welcomes Mladic arrest "I welcome today's arrest of Ratko Mladic in Serbia," Brammertz said. "We are waiting for his extradition to the ICTY, where he will be tried. We commend the Serbian authorities, especially the National Security Council and the Action Team for cooperation with the Hague on Mladic's arrest," reads a statement from the chief prosecutor. In the statement, the prosecutor's office also thanked the Serbian authorities for fulfilling their obligations to the Hague and to justice. "We also commend the international community for its efforts in supporting the measures aimed at arresting Mladic," Brammertz added. According to him, today is an important day for international justice. "Mladic's arrest is a clear sign that commitment to international justice has been confirmed. Today's event proves that people responsible for huge violations of international humanitarian law can no longer count on going unpunished," Brammertz concluded.
