Kosovo Albanian PM Hashim Thaci visited the Brdjani neighborhood in northern Kosovska Mitrovica on Saturday, said reports. The rule of law, said Thaci, will be reinstated in the Serb-dominated north of Kosovo, and according to him the first step for this must be reopening of a court there. Thaci in favor of "rule of law in north" Thaci held talks with the mayor of the southern part of Kosovska Mitrovica, Avni Kastrati, and said 200 new houses would be build there, worth some EUR 5mn. Investments would continue, said he, so that Kosovska Mitrovica becomes a fully united and integrated town, with full implementation of the Ahtisaari plan. The plan drafted by the former UN Kosovo envoy, aimed to give the province supervised independence, was not approved by the UN Security Council, and was rejected by Serbia. Brdjani is one of several neighborhoods in the Serb-dominated part of Kosovska Mitrovica that is home to ethnic Albanians. No Serbs live in the southern, ethnic Albanian part of the divided town. Serbs north of the Ibar River that separates Kosovska Mitrovica accept neither the authority of the government in Pristina, nor the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence made in early 2008. Over the years the tense town has seen numerous incidents and riots, most recently in July, when a man was killed.
