Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac said that he expects that the professionalization of the military will be completed by next year. After this is done, President Boris Tadic will be able to abolish mandatory service for citizens, the minister said on Tuesday in Belgrade. MoD: Professional military by 2011 Sutanovac said that the basic goal of the ministry is to wrap up the professionalization of the Serbian Army this year. If there are no changes made to the budget or big surprises on the job market, the process of the professionalization of the military will be able to complete in the allotted time, Sutanovac said. He reminded that products made by the Serbian defense industries are available on the markets of Iraq, Algeria, America, Canada and other countries, and thanked all the ambassador to Serbia for their help in the realization of new exports, calling on them to continue supporting the effort. He said that a delegation of the Montenegrin Defense Ministry will arrive in Belgrade on January 18 to discuss the division of property between states of the former federal union of Serbia-Montenegro. He said that Serbia is expected to receive six jets, and that Montenegro will receive the rest, as well as a flight simulator. Sutanovac said that the international cooperation of the Defense Ministry is important for “improving the image of not only the army, but the country.” He said that it is important to participate in UN peacekeeping missions, adding that the military is already working in Lebanon and has been called to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Cyprus as well, together with Slovak and Hungarian UN contingents. Sutanovac said that one task of the ministry is to "restore faith in the military", and that the armed forces are right behind the Serbian Orthodox Church when it comes to the most trusted institutions in the country. He added that the increased trust in the military by the citizens and recent surveys that show that there is the least amount of corruption in the armed forces, have been helpful in increasing interest for enrolling in the military academy and other military schools.
