An ethnic Hungarian party has accused Boris Tadic of bringing into question his Hungarian counterpart's visit to this ethnic community in Vojvodina. The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) presidency on Saturday issued a statement which said that Laszlo Solyom's visit was planned for March 15-17, on the occasion of the neighboring country's national holiday, but that the Hungarian president, after a reaction from President Tadic's cabinet, decided he would stay in Vojvodina only on March 15. Controversy over Hungarian president's visit Due to this, the SVM, unhappy with Solyom's decision, has canceled joint celebrations. The party also said that the Serbian president's cabinet took the visit with some reserve, and that an energetic tone brought into question the Hungarian president's right to privately visit the Hungarian ethnic minority in Vojvodina, based on his personal decision. The SVM is "astonished" that Tadic's cabinet chose to "stigmatize" the visit, the statement said. This astonishment was even greater, the press release continued, once it was revealed that Solyom would only attend ceremonies on March 15 in Stara Moravica and Subotica, while the visits planned for the second and third day of his stay in Vojvodina would be postponed for June, when they have been harmonized with Tadic's cabinet. The SVM says that Solyom's decision was "noted", but that the party finds it to be "inexplicable". The party presidency said it was put before a difficult challenge of whether to be satisfied with the short visit, or to cancel the events altogether. The SMV reminded that the during his planned three-day stay, Solyom was to meet with notable figures from the Hungarian ethnic community in Serbia. Party officials today would not offer any further comments on the claims made in the statement.
