"Anti-Hungarian polemic"?

Are you saying Orban/Fidesz-MPP are just misunderstood? Orban didn't say that hungary was a nation of 15 million (i.e. inc. 5 million outside Hungary's borders) amongst other things? (as did his opposite number after winning the election):

"and provides a series of concessions to these
people when visiting Hungary as well as subsidies or financial supports in their own countries."

That the 'Status Law', previously known as the 'Benefit Law', passed by ~90% of parliament, was not controversial and made the Czechs, Slovaks, Romanians et. al rather angry?

Ooops, sorry, that is "Vereczkei Szoros" / "Vereckei Hágó" , the "V" and "B" are next on the keyboard. Shame on me.

James,
you are right. This shows the double standard from people like "democratic" and "European minded" Tadic. In his mind what is allowed to him should not be allowed to his Hungarian collegue. What a "nice" freindly gesture to all Hungarian politicians and citizens, who all - including Solyom - push for the admission of Serbia in the EU. There is a Hungarian saying "don't expect any good deed in reciprocity after your good deed". For most Hungarians this is just an other deep desappointment.

Aleks,

Your comment is anti-Hungarian polemic for the following reason: Even by proponents of that law it was NEVER considered to send pension checks to millions of Hungarians living outside Hungary just because they are Hungarians. Nobody was so shortsided to not realize that Hungary could never efford it. Opponents of that bill were affraid that many poor Hungarian pensioners living in neighboring countries, who never contributed to the Hungarian pension system, would resettle in Hungary to collect pension. It was an exaggereted fear.
That law would have been similar to the current Serbian law stating that Serbs living in foreign countries are Serb citizen as much as Serbs in Serbia. For this reason the Serbian law is much more genereous: it allows Serbs outside Serbia to participate in Serbian elections. As for the Hungarians outside Hungary only a tiny fraction, those having a Hungarian identity card (given only to residents of Hungary)can vote.

Ataman, you as Russian took this occasion again to attack all Hungarians in an indirect way. What is wrong if Solyom participate in a March 15 commemoration in Vojvodina?
(Joe, 7 March 2009 19:14)

Joe, if you did not notice, I get at least as many attacks from your Russian friends. This forum is not about my person. If one is curious really: I am no less Hungarian than Russian or American. Please guys move over your patriotic feelings and face the reality on the ground.

About Sólyom: there is nothing wrong DECENT Hungarian politicians visiting Vojvodina on any occasion and of course on March 15. The accent is on the word "DECENT". I say, Sólyom is not decent and the choice of such is pretty narrow. That is a critics to Hungarian political elite, not more not less.

March 15 is a very important date, in particular the best occasion for Hungary, Croatia and Serbia to show some nice gestures. As we know, in 1848 Vienna used the short-sighted and naïve politics of Hungarian government to spark as much controversy as possible. The Vojvodina-born Croatian bán Josip Jelacic (Jellasics József) mustered an army of Serbs and Croats and attacked (and lost) the battle at Pákózd in September 1848.

So Hungarian president touring Vojvodina and Bánát is a good thing, in particular on March 15. All my concern is, that president has to be a decent guy, not that sad joke. Hint: what happened between Hungary and Ukraina lately with that idiot touring the turul monuments in Carpathian mountains? Why do we need to poke Ukraina in the nose? Of course, the situation of Hungarian minority in Ukraina is by far worse than of few remaining in Croatia and many in Serbia. But he needed to be much more diplomatic. Of course, we just may invade Ukraina and let Magyar Gárda march in Kiev. What a stupid way for Sólyom to show his non-existing stick. Next time he should declare the war on USA, I guess.

The case with Bereczkei Szoros and Sólyom and Turul is just a sample of very poor way to make the politics. With all my disrespect to Yulia Timoshenko, she was right kicking Sólyom in the region under his belt line. Hope, you understand and agree on this.

I recall that not so long ago, Hungary was suggesting that it would consider all Hungarians outside its country as equal to official hungarian citizens, i.e. pensions etc. etc.

Nothing came of this.

Considering the financial crisis, could one imagine Hungary having to support x-millions of hungarians in foreign countries claiming unemployment benefit?

Like Turkey, there is a view amongst the elite that influence should be 'regained' in former territories. How romantic!

How do we reconcile this move by President Tadic with his own visits to Banjaluka and patronisation of Bosnian Serbs?
I thought Bosnia & Herzegovina was an independent country as well...

The moment that sólyom (Sólyom = "hawk") flies away from politics would be a happy one. To Vojvodina-Hungarians: sad, but true - the best Hungary can master now is Lopcsány Fegyenc. Everything else is even worse than that. In the country of blind the one-eyed is the king. I vote for that "one-eyed" even if I know his "qualities". :(

That said, March 15 anniversary does ask for people of other caliber to be present in Vojvodina than that... "hawk".

But if the hawk is there, why not invite other animals to Vojvodina like pigeons or snakes? Maybe that hawk will have a good dinner and solve Kosovo problems. ;)
