He said, "If there is a readiness to open a proper round of negotiations, Serbia will present proposals very soon."

Đelić pointed out that French President Nicola Sarkozy's proposal on additional talks on Kosovo would be unacceptable for Serbia because it would predetermine the outcome.

Sarkozy proposed that Belgrade and Priština get back to direct negotiations, but if those talks fail Ahtisaari's plan for Kosovo should be adopted.

Rupel said, "A little more time should be set aside for thinking and for possible additions and improvements," although, as he put it, he was not convinced Martti Ahtisaari's plan should be dismissed.

"I personally find the plan good in principle, although, of course, that does not rule out some additional solutions. Moreover, I think some additional solutions are necessary, of which I became certain in today's talks," Rupel told journalists.

Đelić said he invited Kouchner to visit Belgrade in July, claiming it would be an important visit, as Kouchner, with his vast experience in the region, could help find a compromise solution.

"We expect certain ideas, heard at the recent G8 meeting, to be transformed into a new round of talks on Kosovo and Metohija," Đelić said.

The deputy prime minister also talked with Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Adamo, who will take over as EU president as of July first.
