Chechnya: 3 Russian soldiers dead

Mostly Muslim Chechnya, the site of two wars pitting rebels against Russian forces since 1994, remains plagued by violence.

The attackers detonated a bomb made from an artillery shell as the armored vehicle passed and then opened fire, the Interior Ministry said.

The assailants fled the scene and the wounded servicemen were hospitalized, the ministry said.

Large-scale battles in Chechnya ended years ago, but rebels continue to stage hit-and-run raids and land-mine explosions against federal troops and forces of the Moscow-backed regional government.

Militant attacks have also become increasingly common in other republics in the North Caucasus region.

In Dagestan, east of Chechnya, suspected militants opened fire on police who stopped their car, and one of the gunmen was killed in the ensuing shootout, regional Interior Ministry spokeswoman Anzhela Martirosova said. The gunbattle occurred Sunday but was not reported by authorities until Tuesday.
