China protests U.S. arms sale to Taiwan

Qin said the proposed sale would "seriously violate" previous commitments made by Washington to reduce arms sales to Taiwan and would represent a "rude interference into China's internal affairs."

The statement said the Chinese side had lodged a formal complaint with the U.S. side over the matter.

The U.S. Defense Department agency that handles arms sales issued a statement Wednesday saying it notified Congress of a possible sale to Taiwan of advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, Maverick air-to-ground missiles and other equipment in a deal worth about US$421 million.

U.S. arms sales to Taiwan are a long contentious issue in Washington's relations with Beijing, often drawing Chinese protests and occasionally buffeting ties.

China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing has never relinquished its claims to the island, vowing to go to war to enforce its sovereignty if necessary.

Washington, once an ally of Taiwan, is still legally bound to assist Taiwan's defense, becoming the island's biggest arms supplier and embroiling the U.S. in the long-running conflict.
