A new law on public procurement will be adopted by the parliament by the end of November, officials say. State Secretary with the Ministry of Finance Slobodan Ilic (DS) made the announcement in Belgrade Friday. Public procurement law in November Ilic reminded that the adoption of the law was one of the obligations Serbia undertook for this year, and added that the law's implementation would allow for significant savings and lowering of the corruption levels in the country. According to him, Serbia currently has 12,000 entities that place orders, which must operate in line with the Law on Public Procurement, with a potential of 80,000 companies that offer goods and services. Some 250,000 deals are made in Serbia each year as part of the public procurement system, with transactions worth a total of some USD 1.7bn, which, a sector which, unless properly regulated, becomes a magnet for corruption and other illegal practices.
